A. What is this course?
Chem 105X and 106X is a two-semester series, including laboratory, for science and engineering students. (The "X" is just a UAF designation for a course that satisfies some of the requirements of the "Core Curriculum". See p. 125 in the 09-10 catalog for further explanation.) One would not normally plan on taking just Chem 105X since it is a series that is best taken sequentially, and Chem 106X relies heavily on material from Chem 105X. However, you may wish to invest in only the materials for one semester to minimize your textbook expenditures now. See details below. If you buy only the minimum now, and you end up taking Chem 106X, as most do, you will need to buy that text and another OWL card. The total cost will end up being higher.

B. What do I really need to buy?
1. Textbook:  Kotz, Treichel, and Townsend, Chemistry and Chemical Reactivity, 7th Ed. Either Volume 1 (the first half), or the full text. See more details below

2. OWL card. This card (or the serial number on it) gives you access to the Online Web Learning website where you logon to complete required homework assignments. Part of your grade depends on completing the homework. You can buy 6-month or 12-month cards, at either the bookstore website, or at http://owl.cengage.com . The latter is totally electronic and you get essentially instant access to OWL - although the actual questions will not be available until about the first day of classes. The 6-month card will run out in the middle of Chem 106X the next semester, so you would have to buy another 6-month card then.

3. Preparing for your ACS Exam. ACS is "American Chemical Society" which publishes a standard final exam used in Chem 105X. This book actually covers BOTH semesters, so you only need to get it once. We will identify which chapters to study for our final exam. This is a excellent book: inexpensive and chockfull of useful study information!

4. You MAY need to buy a Response Card Rf - if you don't already have one. This is a "classroom clicker" that students use in class to answer quiz questions - some graded, some not graded. Most professors make part of the semester grade dependent on clicker questions. So having one, and bringing it to class, is a requirement. These are used in several courses around UAF and you can use the same one for any class that uses this type of clicker. See the following website for more information and images:

C. Textbook versions
Go to www.iChapters.com to see all the variations that are possible. All are Kotz/Treichel/Townsend.
Any one of the following will work (Volume 2 is not shown here - it applies only to Chem 106X). There are several options on the UAF text website, and more at www.ichapters.com . BTW, the latter says "free shipping on orders over $40."

Texts and OWL cards can also be purchased at www.cengage.com/ichapters/uafchem/

Chemistry and Chemical Reactivity, Enhanced Edition, 7th Ed  ISBN-10:0-495-39029-1 ISBN-13:978-0-495-39029-9. Covers both semesters. This is in paperback. 'The Enhanced Review Edition includes new exam preparation sections designed to help you better prepare for multiple chapter examinations. "Let's Review" sections present study tips, key points lists, and new exam-type questions for multiple chapters grouped according to where most exams occur in the course.' It also has pre-made tabs that can be used to mark different pages.

Full Edition (ISBN-10:0-495-38703-7  | ISBN-13:978-0-495-38703-9) Covers both semesters, in hardback.

Bundle: Chemistry and Chemical Reactivity, Volume 1, 7th + General Chemistry OWL 1-Semester Printed Access Card, 7th Edition  ISBN-10:0-495-63199-X ISBN-13:978-0-495-63199-6. Volumes 1 and 2 split the text exactly the same way UAF Chem 105 and 106 are split. Another benefit is that this book is way lighter than the full text!

eBook: Chemistry and Chemical Reactivity, 7th Ed (ISBN-10: 0-495-68043-5 ISBN-13: 978-0-495-68043-7). This a 12-month access to a website where you can download all the textbook chapters in a readable format (pdf). This would be the least expensive (but you lose a lot by not having the whole text you can physically thumb through IMHO, JK).

eChapters: Each chapter can be purchased separately for $7.49.

D. Other books and recommended
These are not generally incorporated per se into the course - but as extra study materials.

Student Solutions Manual As the title states, has the worked out answers to all the end-of-the-chapter problems in the full text. JK strongly recommends this, or access to it (it could be shared by a couple of students, for example.)
Essential Algebra for Chemistry Students.
If you know your math is weak, get this and use it!
Survival Guide contains tips, cautions, extra pointers, practice questions, etc.
Study Guide contains extra notes, and longer explanations of problems and their solutions.
