Lecture #7: Alcohols

Read: pg. 361-381

HW: pg. 386-387 (1,2,5,6,7,11,21,23)

Objectives:

  1. Know common names and structures for methanol (methyl alcohol), ethanol (ethyl alcohol), isopropyl alcohol, ethylene glycol and propylene glycol.
  2. Know what hydrogen bonding is.
  3. Know that alcohols are liquid at room temperature and flammable (a very small spark initiates combustion: alcohol + O2 ® CO2 + H2O).
  4. Know why short chain alcohols are water soluble.
  5. Know what 1o (primary), 2o (secondary) and 3o (tertiary) carbons are.
  6. Know why methanol is toxic and why ethanol is used as an antidote for methanol poisoning.
  7. Know that the proof of an alcoholic beverage is equal to twice the ethanol concentration.
  8. Know what LD50, ED50 and therapeutic index mean.
