Objectives:

  1. Know structure, use and common name for ethyne (acetylene).
  2. Know IUPAC names for benzene containing compounds.
  3. Know what resonance means and what the inner circle in benzene represents.
  4. Know the difference between aromatic and aliphatic.
  5. Know the meaning of ortho, meta and para substitution.
  6. Know that benzene is more toxic than toluene or xylene (dimethylbenzene) but that they are all toxic!
  7. Be familiar with the structures for toluene, xylene, phenol, styrene and naphthalene.
