Objectives:

  1. Know that the ene in alkene means double bond.
  2. Make molecular models of ethane, propane, butane, ethene, propene and butene. (note ethylene and propylene are common names for ethene and propene).
  3. Search labels for prefixes and suffixes you recognize (e.g., meth, eth, ane, ene, cyclo).
  4. Know how to name alkenes according to IUPAC guidelines.
  5. Understand what is meant by hydrogenation, saturated, unsaturated, saturated fatty acid, monounsaturated fatty acid, polyunsaturated fatty acid, iodine number, polymerization, polyethylene and polypropylene.
  6. Know what a branched chain hydrocarbon is.
