Objectives:

  1. Know that alkanes are saturated. That means every C is bonded to 4 other atoms.
  2. Know the names and structures of the alkanes, methane to decane and the cylcoalkanes, cyclopropane to cyclodecane.
  3. Be able to name alkanes according to IUPAC nomenclature.
  4. Be able to write a structural formula when given an IUPAC name.
  5. Know the physical, physiological and chemical properties of the alkanes.
  6. Know that incomplete combustion of a hydrocarbon yields CO.
  7. Be able to name halogenated hydrocarbons.
  8. Be able to recognize isomers.
