Biochemistry in the World Around You

Purpose: Demonstrate your knowledge of biochemistry by addressing one of the following in poster format:

  1. Propose a new treatment for AIDS/HIV or cancer. (References should describe other treatments or support the development of your ideas. Your ideas may be completely novel)!
  2. Explain how a specific diet affects metabolism of carbohydrates, proteins and/or fatty acids. [Example diets are: ketogenic (high protein and fat, low carbohydrate), low fat, slim fast etc.].
  3. Explain a current event related to biochemistry. (Select a topic from the list provided or get approval for an alternative topic).

Poster Session format: (you may work separately or in groups of 2-3): Design a poster to illustrate the topic. Posters will be displayed April 27during class time. One author must stand next to the poster to present it to classmates. Other group members will spend the time evaluating other student’s posters.

Posters should be organized as follows (label each section, except the title):

  1. Title: The title should be informative and interesting.
  2. Introduction: Identify what the topic is and why it is of interest.
  3. Body: Explain basic biochemistry related to the topic and why it is relevant. Clearly describe the issue and suggest how it may effect the general public now and in the future.
  4. Conclusion: Summarize, in bullet format, the issues and content of the poster.
  5. Discussion: State your opinions on the topic.
  6. References: Cite at least 1 chemistry text book and 2 articles from popular periodicals (more references add depth to the poster)
  7. Acknowledgments: List all group members and describe what contribution they made to the project.

Assessment:

Posters will be evaluated as follows:

  1. Title: Is it interesting and informative?
  2. Introduction: Is the topic clearly identified and relevant?
  3. Body: Is the basic biochemistry needed to understand the topic clearly explained and relevant to the topic? Is the issue or topic explained so you can understand it? Is it clear how this topic may affect the general public now and in the future? Are graphics (drawings, molecular structures, graphs, schematics etc.) used to facilitate understanding of the topic, basic biochemistry and/or purpose of the poster? Is the poster esthetically pleasing?
  4. Conclusion: Is the poster adequately summarized in bullet format?
  5. Discussion: Is the opinion presented clearly stated, informed and original?
  6. References: Were at least 1 chemistry text and 2 popular periodicals cited?
