REFERRALS
Clinicians at the Center for Health and Counseling routinely provide referrals for specialized medical services provided in the Fairbanks Community. These include, but are not limited to, internal medicine, surgery, dermatology, obstetrics/gynecology and eye care. We also provide referrals for physical therapy services after students are evaluated by a provider in the clinic. See Student Health Insurance for details regarding referrals.
GENERAL PHYSICAL EXAMINATIONS
Physical exams are offered for general wellness screening, for pre-participation in college programs and for pre-employment purposes.
WOMEN'S HEALTH CARE
Services include routine gynecologic examinations including pap tests, pelvic and breast exams, contraceptive counseling, pregnancy testing and counseling and evaluation and treatment for sexually transmitted infections. Referrals for colposcopy and prenatal care are available along with other referrals for specialized care when required.
CONTRACEPTIVES WE CARRY - See also Fees for Services, Meds and Labs
The list of medicines we carry and the prices are subject to change at any time. Contact our office for up to date information on what we carry and what it costs. We carry oral contraceptives available, typically in generic formulation, and DepoProvera shots. See one of our medical practitioners to discuss how we may be able to meet your particular needs.
Emergency Contraception (the morning-after pill")
The Center offers emergency contraception medication (Plan B) to prevent unintended pregnancies. The pills must be started within 72 hours of unprotected intercourse to reduce the chance of pregnancy. The earlier the medication is begun, the better chance that prevention will be successful. If unprotected intercourse occurs and the Center is not open (e.g. weekends, school holidays), a student should seek care from a provider in the community. If you are sexually active and not using routine contraception (or are using condoms), consider asking your health care provider for a back-up prescription for Plan B to have in hand in case of emergency.
For contraceptives that we do not carry or provide, prescriptions or referrals can be written by a provider. Call or make an appointment for further information.
PHARMACY SERVICES - Fees for Services, Meds and Labs
The Center stocks a limited number of commonly prescribed medications. These medications are pre-packaged for resale and are offered at a discounted price to students. The list of medications in our formulary changes from time to time and there is no guarantee that a particular medication will always be available at a given time. For medications we do not stock, providers can write prescriptions for students to be filled at local pharmacies.
LABORATORY SERVICES - Fees for Services, Meds and Labs
The Center for Health and Counseling provides on-site phlebotomy (blood-drawing) services and some on-site processing of labs. The following tests are processed on site:
- Strep screens
- Mono tests
- Urinalysis
- Pregnancy tests
- Glucose (blood sugar) tests
- Flu tests
- Common vaginal infection tests (e.g. yeast infections)
For other tests, the specimens are obtained at the Center and sent to specialty labs for processing. Quest Diagnositics web-site maintains a broad range of information on diagnostic laboratory tests. OUTREACH PROGRAMS The staff at the Center for Health and Counseling provides several educational outreach programs throughout the school year. These include, but are not limited to, sexual health awareness, breast cancer education, tobacco cessation, nutrition and fitness outreach and a yearly health fair program.
