All students taking 9 or more credit hours at UAF and all International students regardless of the number of hours are required to have health insurance. They can meet that requirement by purchasing the student health insurance plan during fee payment or by carrying their own health insurance plan.

The insurance premium for the regular student plan is NOT automatically added to student bills. Students who need to purchase the student plan to meet the above noted university requirement must ask the business office to add the premium to their bills at fee payment or purchase on line via web fee payment.

The regular UAF Student Health Insurance Plan is designed to help finance health care beyond that which is provided at the Center for Health and Counseling. Insured students may purchase coverage for their eligible dependents. An Insurance Coordinator is available to answer questions (call 474-7043) and assist with claims.

Who is Eligible for the Student Insurance Plan?

All students enrolled in 6 or more credit hours and attending regular classes are eligible. Students taking 6 credits but not in classroom based classes may enroll in the plan at a higher premium. Call the Center for information at 474-7043.

All enrolled international students regardless of number of credit hours.

Spouses and children of eligible students currently enrolled in the insurance plan are eligible to enroll at spouse and child rates.

Students taking fewer than 6 credit hours may enroll in the Student Insurance Plan under the Distance Education provisions - see p.1 of brochure.

All students enrolled in the Student Health Insurance Plan must also pay the Health Center Fee.

Who Needs Student Health Insurance?

Students in any of the following groups are required to carry health insurance.

  • All students enrolled in 9 or more credit hours
  • All International Students ("hard waiver" required - see below)
  • All students living in university housing

The university business office may check with individual students from time to time to confirm that students in the above categories are properly insured.

Students taking 6 - 8 credit hours may enroll on an optional basis.

Students taking fewer than 6 credit hours are not eligible for the Student Insurance Plan.

All students enrolled in the Student Health Insurance Plan must also pay the Health Center Fee.

How much does it cost and how do I pay for the Student Insurance Plan?

The UAF Student Insurance Plan premiums are listed in the insurance brochure - see links at top of page.

ALL payments for the regular student insurance are made at the Business Office during fee payment.

No insurance premium payments are received at the Center for Health and Counseling.

Payment for Major Medical, spouses and children can be made by mail with Check or credit card. Optional enrollment forms can be picked up at the Center for Health and Counseling or at the Business Office.

Is There a Deductible?

There are no deductibles if you receive treatment at the Center.

There is a $150 deductible per illness or injury when medical treatment is provided outside the Center, regardless of whether you were referred by the Center medical staff for the treatment. There is an additional $100 deductible applied to emergency room treatment when that treatment does not lead to hospitalization. There is a maximum deductible amount of $600 per family per year. See the policy brochure for details.

The deductible in the student plan is necessary in order to keep the premium affordable. The deductible can be avoided in many instances by coming to the Center for treatment. The Emergency Room deductible is intended to discourage unnecessary use of emergency room services.

Can I Waive the Insurance Plan?

Student taking 9 or more credits are required to carry health insurance. Students needing health insurance must have the premium for the student health insurance added to their bill during registration and fee payment. Student insurance is not automatically added to bills except for International Students - see next paragraph. Students who have other health insurance must sign a waiver at the business office if they do not wish to carry the student health insurance.

International students are automatically billed for the annual student insurance premium. To have this fee waived, International Students must provide proof of comparable coverage to the Office of International Programs.

Do I Need a Referral? Why?

Yes, you will need a referral from the Center in order to ensure coverage for physical therapy, chiropractic or acupuncture. The $100 deductible applies to all services provided outside the Center regardless of referral.

Physiotherapy: Physical therapy without hospitalization or surgery 30 days prior requires a referral from the Center for Health and Counseling.

Chiropractic and Acupuncture are payable Only when referred by the
Center for Health and Counseling.

How Do I File a Claim?

When students receive services at the Center for Health and Counseling, all claims are filed by the Center directly to the student insurance company and all services provided at the Center for Health and Counseling are covered at 100% including but not limited to: Physical Examinations, STD testing and other services.

When students are seen by another clinic in Fairbanks or elsewhere, the other clinic will usually file claims for students as long as students have the policy number and insurance information. See policy brochure for current policy number and filing information.

See the policy brochure for details of coverage under the student plan. Copies of the brochure are available at the Center for Health and Counseling and at the Business Office, or follow links at top of page.

Are prescriptions covered?

In general, prescriptions are covered subject to the limits of the policy and subject to some specific listed exclusions. Birth control pills are covered only if provided by the Center. Psychotherapeutic medications are covered under the limits for psychotherapy benefits.

Some advantages of the UAF student health insurance plan

- Services provided at the Center for Health and Counseling are paid at 100%.

- The student policy will pay in full for most medications or lab tests you might get at the campus health center (remember - there are small fees for a few things at the campus health center).

In general, if you're reasonably healthy and believe you only need to insure yourself against the unforeseen bumps and bruises of life, then the student policy is a great deal. It provides some low deductible coverage for a wide variety of common illnesses and injuries. But it doesn't cover everything and the limits of coverage are modest. If you know that you have serious health problems which may require expensive treatments, then you may want to invest in more comprehensive (and more expensive!) health insurance coverage.

The UAF student health insurance plan isn't perfect. It attempts to balance health benefits against cost - trying to offer the best benefits for the most students for the lowest cost. This is a balancing act. In short, we could have a more comprehensive plan but the premium would be a lot higher.
