Memo from Chancellor Jones to the UAF community (March 24, 2008)

TO: UAF faculty, staff and students

FROM: Steve Jones, Chancellor

UAF has been our life, quite literally, for Judy and me for four years now. With the arrival of two grandchildren last fall, we have found ourselves in a position where we want to be within easier reach of them. This university has been our calling, but now we feel some competition.

With that in mind, I want to announce that I am pursuing other opportunities in higher education outside of UAF. Although these opportunities may not develop into any immediate offers, I do want you to know that we are exploring ways to combine a meaningful, challenging, and satisfying next position with achieving simpler access to family. In the meantime, my passion will remain directed to UAF.

I am also making this announcement now so that President Hamilton can begin the process of talking to the university community about selecting an interim chancellor. This process needs to begin now so that input can be gathered from faculty, students and staff who are still on campus for the academic year.

We will keep you informed as that process begins and as our plans become more definitive. We both thank you for welcoming us into the UAF family, and wish you the best as we wrap up another exciting academic year at "America’s Arctic University".
