Fairbanks: Our Homebase
Fairbanks is the perfect jumping off point for thriving statewide research and education programs in oceanography, marine biology and fisheries. Our students and faculty are based in 12 different locations around the state from Nome to Unalaska to Ketchikan. We also have major research outreach centers in Juneau and Anchorage. From the center of the state, we can easily access 6,640 miles of Alaska coastline, lakes, rivers, and communities that serve as a learning and research platform for our students and faculty. Our central location at the University of Alaska Fairbanks, Alaska’s only PhD-granting institution, allows our researchers and students to benefit from collaborations with other scientific programs on campus including the Alaska Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit, the Geophysical Institute, and the International Arctic Research Center. Our impact is global. Faculty conduct research all over Alaska and the world, and students can take a majority of our courses from just about anywhere using our state-of-the-art video conferencing capabilities.
There are a myriad of scientific disciplines being studied at the College of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences (CFOS) Fairbanks campus, in ranging from freshwater and saltwater ecology to studying oceanography in the Polar regions.
CFOS is located in the O’Neill, Irving II, Elvey, and Arctic Health Research buildings. The CFOS Dean and central office, the Institute of Marine Science, Coastal Marine Institute, Academic Programs office, classrooms, and several faculty and graduate student offices and labs are located in the O’Neill building. Teaching and research labs, classrooms, and faculty offices for the Institute and Fisheries Division are located in the Irving and Arctic Health Research Building and the Alaska Sea Grant office is located in the Elvey building.
Approximately 25 tenure-track faculty, more than half of the CFOS graduate students, and nearly all the fisheries undergraduate students call Fairbanks home.
