Cooperative Extension Service

Bethel District

The Bethel Cooperative Extension Service District covers approximately 186,000 square miles. Bethel is the trading and governmental hub of Kuskokwim Delta. Forty-six villages are served from Bethel. All the villages are Yup'ik Eskimo Villages, making the majority of our clientele Alaska Native.

Subsistence is the way of life on the Delta. The huge area is home for caribou, moose and other animals important to the Native diet. Several varieties of fish are available year round. The Extension Home Economist is very important to the people as they realize the need for more knowledge of safe food handling and preservation, gardening and economic development. The program assistant attempts to reach the youth and youth workers with training to develop self esteem, goal setting techniques and career development.
