Community Leader Alaska Mine Tour
Mineral development has played a prominent role in Alaska's history. Modern state and federal environmental laws and mining regulations offer greater protection for areas surrounding new mines and the opportunity for local residents to participate in the process. Most Alaskans know little about that process and have never seen an operating mine.
UAF Mining Extension hosted a 3-day intensive workshop and tour of the Ft. Knox and Pogo gold mines to offer community leaders the opportunity to experience first hand how mines operate, the conditions and measure taken to operate with minimum impact and potential jobs associated with a mine.
