The Northwest District has historically served the Bering Straits and NANA Regions. This area represents a land mass larger than the state of Indiana and has a population base of at least 20,000. The majority of the residents are of Inupiat heritage.
The region is subsistence oriented. It is also the center of the reindeer industry as well as a center for much of the state's mining. The economy of the region is based primarily on state and federal monies.
In recent years expansion of the program has included home and commercial horticulture, community and economic development, and resource education.
