Matanuska-Susitna Copper River District includes the 24,000 square mile Mat-Su Borough and additional areas in the Copper River Basin that include Gakona, Copper Center, Kenny Lake and Valdez communities outside of the borough. It is associated with scattered pockets of suburban, and rural and subsistence lifestyle to residents.

University of Alaska's Palmer Center for Sustainable Living was formerly known as the Palmer Research and Extension Center. Several Cooperative Extension Service faculty and staff members work out of the center, giving them closer contact with both the ongoing research and the researchers.
