HOUSE of the MONTH

FEBRUARY-JUNE 2008

If you know of a house/building/structure that demonstrates the challenges of building in Alaska and would like to share it with us, please send a picture and a short description of the structure and its features to Rich Seifert.

This is a photograph of the Sitnasauk building on Front Street in Nome. As you can see Sitnasuak has invested heavily in photovoltaic solar panels in order to lower their utility electric bills. This photograph was taken in January and shows that there was even sun available on them on the face of the building at that time of the year. My understanding is that there is a great concern for the utility costs in the building and there may even be more solar panels added to the building as time and money allows.

To see such an interesting and confident display of solar technologies in Nome is very rewarding, and is a superb example for the rest of the state.
