Downtown Sitka is a walkable, bike friendly, welcoming community. Sitka is home to USCG Air Station Sitka, the USCG cutter Maple, SEARHC/ Mt Edgecumbe Hospital, Mt Edgecumbe High School (State of Alaska’s premier boarding high school), Sitka National Historic Park, Sitka District of Tongass National Forest, the Sitka School District, Allen Marine and numerous businesses.
Commercial fishing, tourism, education and service industry employ many people in the District. The timber industry based in the Tongass National Forest is a remnant of what it was prior to 1993. Southeast Alaska’s economy has struggled since the demise of industrial logging.
Travel within the District is mostly restricted to airplanes and boats. Sitka District works on the CES strategic themes of food security, renewable energy, climate change, community development. We look forward to hearing from residents of Sitka District, Alaska’s southern most Extension District.
