The Alaska Wood Energy Conference, Biomass for Sustainable Communities, will be held in Ketchikan, Alaska, at the Ted Ferry Civic Center on Oct. 9–11, 2012. Community leaders, agency representatives, researchers and individuals from around the state and region will gather to share experiences, resources and knowledge, recognizing the potential of woody biomass as an alternative energy resource for Alaska.

Over 60 percent of Alaska’s land resources are forested, with a majority of Alaskans living in communities adjacent to these lands. Locally available woody biomass can reduce energy costs and create economic opportunities in many of these communities.

The 2012 AWEC will highlight the success stories of Alaska communities that have implemented woody biomass projects. The conference will showcase new technologies and potential business developments and bring in leading forest industry representatives, forest managers and researchers to discuss such topics as the sustainability and environmental impacts of biomass harvest and production and new cutting edge technology appropriate for Alaska. Optional field trips will include tours of operating biomass burners and small-level pellet production facilities in Ketchikan and an opportunity to visit Prince of Wales Island to tour several facilities there.

Sponsorship Opportunities

In the past AWEC has been well attended, averaging 200 participants and exhibitors. These conferences have been successful in part because of the generous support received from Alaska’s businesses, organizations and government agencies. Your support has created opportunities to share knowledge and experience for better utilizing Alaska’s woody biomass resources. Individuals, agencies and other organizations interested in supporting the success of this conference are provided with several options.
