Description: Leafy spurge is a perennial plant reproducing from seed and roots. Multiple stems are produced in a cluster and can reach up to 3 feet tall. Leaves are 1 to 4 inches long with entire margins. Flowers are yellow-green and small in clusters. Heart-shaped yellow-green bracts enclose individual flowers. The plant contains a white milky sap that can irritate skin. Leafy spurge was introduced from Europe as a seed contaminant. Control: Perennial plants require depletion of nutrient reserves in the root system, prevention of seed production and prevention of dispersal. Eradication is difficult due to extensive root systems. |
