To become an adult leader:

  • Contact our 4-H agent at 474-2427 or drop by the Cooperative Extension Office located at 724 27th Ave., Suite 2 & 3 in Fairbanks
  • Read the Volunteer 4-H Organizational Leader Position Description
  • Fill out the new leader volunteer application
  • Have an interview with the local 4-H Extension agent
  • Have reference checks completed
  • Have a background check done
  • Attend the New Leader training and get approval of the 4-H agent
  • Complete the leader enrollment form
  • Pay leader enrollment fee of $5 ($1 insurance included) for leader or $6 for Horse or ATV Leaders ($2 insurance included)
  • Get your club busy doing projects
  • Attend Leaders Council meetings to learn all the opportunities available to you

An adult volunteer 4-H leader must be at least 18 years of age. There are several categories of adult volunteer leadership. Certification to be a 4-H leader is required in the following project areas:

  • Shooting Sports
  • Therapeutic Horse
  • Therapeutic Dog
  • 4-H Guide Dog.

4-H Club Organizational Leader: An adult leader who is responsible for the proper functioning of a 4- H club.

4-H Project Leader: An adult leader responsible for a given project in a 4-H club. In a club devoted to one or more projects, the club and project leader could be the same person.

Resource leader: An adult leader who works with other 4-H leaders in a community to promote 4-H, helps new clubs get started, recruits and trains new leaders, serves on a 4-H Advisory Committee or teaches special projects.

Tanana District Leaders Council: Leaders from all clubs in the district are welcome at the council meetings. Policy and schedules for district events are implemented. Meetings are held the second Tuesday of the month at 6:30 p.m. in Old U Park, room 154. They do not meet in August.

Tanana District Horse Leaders Council: All horse leaders are encouraged to attend these meetings where district level policy and events are scheduled for horse members. This council meets the second Saturday of the months September through May, at 10:00 a.m. in Old U Park, room 154.

Tanana District 4-H/FFA Livestock Committee: All livestock - small and large - leaders are encouraged to attend these meetings where district level policy and events are scheduled for livestock members. This group is scheduled to meet the first Wednesday of the month at 6:30 p.m. in Old U Park, room 154. They meet September, November, February, May and then other meetings as needed.
