Alaskan 4-H'er in the 2012 Olympics

From her official website, http://coreycogdell.com/: "Corey Cogdell is many things but most notably she is driven. She holds many of the highest accolades in her sport of International Trapshooting, including becoming the first American woman to ever win an Olympic Medal in her sport, and at 24 she is only getting started.

Born in Alaska Corey began shooting and hunting with her father when she was a young girl. She discovered her love of shotgun shooting and honed her trapshooting skills through a local 4-H Club shooting program.

From there, she went on to train for Olympic-style trapshooting and, after two short years, became the only member of the 2008 United States Olympic women’s trapshooting team.

In Beijing, China, on Aug. 11, 2008, Corey, called on a lifetime of shooting experience to win Team USA’s first shooting medal of the Olympics, the bronze in Women’s Trap."

The cyber summit was webcast online at various district locations across the state, in an effort to unite more leaders while saving time and money. Districts were expected to hold local meetings and share a live workshop. Potlucks and other fun activities were encouraged.

Youth in Governance 2012

We were once again able to offer the Youth In Governance (YIG) program this year, February 12-17, 2012, thanks to a generous donation from the Vice President of Academic Affairs office and BP.

We worked with a select few individuals from around the state to help them understand the legislative process. We received monies that funded most of the cost for up to four adults and eight youth to participate in Juneau.

For past information on eligibility, costs, required audios and chaperons, please read the program announcement and schedule outline, as well as the national 4-H reports on YIG.

"Kids Who Care" named Service Group of the Month 2011

Congratulations, 4-H'ers!

The 21st Century Community Learning Center, North Pole Elementary After School Program in partnership with UAF 4-H has been named "Service Group of the Month" for October, 2011. The North Pole mayor's office issued a proclamation, held by the students pictured at left.

The purpose of the after school program, as stated in the proclamation, is to "instill a sense of belonging by working together with kids to learn how to solve problems and make decisions and successfully contribute to our community."

The "Kids Who Care" program and its 13 students led by Nancy Graff have been involved in successful recycling project and clean-up projects since 2010 and also created posters of appreciation for firefighters and police on 9-11.

The group is currently planning take care of the Beaver Springs Nature Trail. In the future, the group hopes to adopt an Alaska village and collect Christmas toys for the less fortunate, reaching out to the other children they meet from those projects as pen pals.

Kodiak Rocket Launch 2011

4-H teens provided sourdough pancakes at the launch on Sept. 27 to about 100 people. Teens prepped, cooked and served from 3:30–9 a.m.

They spent the night at a nearby cabin, as the facility is 35 miles outside town. The teens also attended a mini leadership retreat focused on club and local government, parliamentary procedure, and identifying leadership skills.

Mongolia Trip 2011

Greetings from Ulaan Bataar, Mongolia.

A quick check in to let you know the Alaskans are doing GREAT here in Mongolia. Both Kira and Mariah are fantastic ambassadors representing Alaska in a very positive way.

We talked with the US Ambassador two nights ago about our Chancellor's visit last week developing new relationships with a mining engineering program for Mongolian students at UAF. He reminded us of a close relationship the Alaska National Guard has had with Mongolia the past ten years and also a sister city relationship with Fairbanks and a not now remembered Mongolian city.

Great awakening for each of us on our journey. We are taking hundreds of photos and many memories daily.

Mara's Sweetie Bird presentation 2011

On Thursday, Feb. 24, 2011, at the Fairbanks Noel Wien Public Library, our CES Community Development Agent, Mara Bacsujlaky and her friendly chicken, Sweetie Bird, gave a presentation on chickens to a group of about 50 pre-schoolers and their parents.

The presentation - All about Chickens - is in conjunction with a reading of The Chicken in the Family - one of the books in the North Star Imagination Library series. The event was organized by PJ McCracken and Emily Vockeroth.

After the presentation, Sweetie Bird was available for petting and just loved the attention!

Youth in Governance 2013

February 17-22
Juneau, AK

Are you 14-18 and want to learn about state government, meet with State Legislators, and learn how to make your voice heard? YIG might be just for you. The registration fee of $200 covers lodging, ground transportation while in Juneau, activities and most meals. You are responsible for transportation to and from Juneau, and a couple of meals. Adult chaperons are also invited to join in the fun to learn along with teen representatives.

Let your local 4-H agent know of your interest or send a note to mklowder@alaska.edu for more information. If planning ahead for travel, activities begin 8:30 p.m., Sunday, Feb. 17 and plan to depart Friday morning/early afternoon.

Day 1 Sunday, February 17

7:00 PM - Run down of week and get acquainted games

Day 2 Monday, February 18

8-9 - Breakfast

10-12 – Legislative Information Office

a. The legislature and how it works.

b. The difference between senators and representatives.

c. The different roles in a committee.

d. Have individuals choose a role of a committee member they would like to play

(i.e. lobbyist, chair, member) and move through a mock committee session. We will use a mock bill presented by one of the districts before hand.

12-1 - lunch

1-4:00 – Visit Committee Hearings

4:00-5:00 - Prepare and practice for our visits to Capitol Hill

5:00 - 6:00 – Homework

6:00 - 7:15 – Dinner

7:30 - Fun

Day 3 Tuesday, February 19

8-9 - Breakfast

9-11:00 – Districts meet with personal Senator and Representatives
