Education, School of
The School of Education in the Graduate School offers both undergraduate and graduate courses culminating in four degrees: bachelor of education, M.A.T. secondary, master of education and educational specialist, as well as teacher licensure. The school also offers coursework and internship experiences preparing candidates for Alaska state licensure in teaching (Type A), and guidance and counseling (Type C). In addition, an M.Ed. degree program in guidance and counseling prepares educators to be elementary and secondary school counselors. Students applying for the guidance and counseling program choose either to study for an endorsement of the Type A teaching certificate or Type C certification. The UAF School of Education is approved by the Alaska Department of Education to recommend its graduates for Alaska licensure as elementary and secondary teachers and school counselors. Faculty hold their academic appointments on both the Fairbanks campus and UAF's rural campuses, and courses are available on-site and by distance delivery in Nome, Kotzebue, Bethel, Barrow, Dillingham and in the Interior, as well as on the Fairbanks campus, in keeping with the school's commitment to preparing educators for rural Alaska. Faculty research in language and literacy, cross-cultural studies, small and rural schools, curriculum and instruction and subject area studies support the school's academic programs.
