Degree: B.A.

Minimum Requirements for Degree: 130 credits

Eskimo languages are spoken by Far Northern peoplefrom the northeastern tip of Siberia, across Alaska and Canada, to East Greenland. The Eskimo languages include the four Yupik languages of Alaska and Siberia as well as Inuit, the Alaskan sector of which is called Inupiaq. In terms of population and numbers of speakers, Inupiaq is the second largest language in Alaska. Of the Yupik languages, Central Yup'ik has by far the largest population and number of speakers of any Alaska language. Eskimo languages are the linguistic heritage of more than half of Alaska's Native population.

Students who obtain their B.A. in an Eskimo language, either Central Yup'ik or Inupiaq, may be employed as Native language instructors or language specialists for school districts or Native organizations. No other university in the U.S. offers a B.A. in Eskimo.

Students in linguistics or anthropology may want to complete a minor in Eskimo and add a distinctly Alaska emphasis to their education.
