2004-2005 UAF Catalog

Police and Fire Departments

The UAF Police Department is committed to supporting an environment in which teaching, research and public service may flourish. With community involvement, the department protects persons and property on the Fairbanks campus. In addition to ordinary patrol, crime prevention and investigative duties, UAF police regularly present outreach programs on topics of importance to the community. The department has an award-winning K-9 program, summer and winter bike patrols, and one of the few officers in Alaska trained in the forensic recovery of computers. In 2000, the Herman Goldstein Problem-Oriented Policing awards committee recognized the UAF Police Department for its study of alcohol-related problems and solutions on campus.

The University Fire Department provides fire, emergency medical service (EMS), and rescue services to the UAF campus and to the University Fire Service Area, which covers a five-mile radius around the campus. The department is nationally recognized and is staffed full time at two stations, one on campus and one in the fire service area. The department’s fire prevention division works to ensure that all UAF facilities comply with code and fire safety standards.

The University Emergency Dispatch Center, a regional 24-hour 911-communication center located in the UAF public safety building, dispatches the Police Department and the Fire Department. Both departments provide exceptional employment and career opportunities for students who wish to make a difference as community service officers. These officers assist with campus security and serve as firefighter/EMTs and emergency communication dispatchers. Many UAF students have gone on to positions with agencies around Alaska and the nation as a result of their experience in public safety work at the university.

The emergency telephone for both police and fire is 911.
