The Yup'ik Language Proficiency program is designed to provide students with the opportunity to pursue structured study of Yup'ik in order to develop intermediate-level speaking and listening skills, as well as basic reading and writing abilities in the language. The certificate may serve as a step on the way to a two-year or four-year degree.

Certificate Program

  1. Complete the general university requirements.
  2. Complete the certificate requirements (As part of the certificate requirements, the communication, computation and human relations content is embedded in some of the major required courses for this program.)
  3. Complete the following:

    a. ESK 130 – Beginning Yup'ik Grammar 3 credits
    ESK 208 –Yup'ik Composition 3 credits
    ESK 240 – Introduction to Reading Yup'ik 3 credits

  4. b. Complete one of the following sequences:

    ESK 121 – Elementary Central Yup'ik Apprenticeship I 4 credits

    ESK 122 – Elementary Central Yup'ik Apprenticeship II 4 credits

    ESK 123 – Elementary Central Yup'ik Apprenticeship III 4 credits

    or

    ESK 103 – Conversational Central Yup'ik 3 credits

    ESK 104 – Conversational Central Yup'ik 3 credits

    ESK 203 – Intermediate Central Yup'ik 3 credits

    ESK 204 – Intermediate Central Yup'ik 3 credits

    c. Complete one of the following sequences:

    ESK 221 – Intermediate Central Yup'ik Apprenticeship I 3 credits

    ESK 222 – Intermediate Central Yup'ik Apprenticeship II 3 credits

    ESK 223 – Intermediate Central Yup'ik Apprenticeship III 3 credits

    or

    ESK 205 – Regaining Fluency in Yup'ik 3 credits

    ESK 206 – Regaining Fluency in Yup'ik 3 credits

    ESK 223 – Intermediate Central Yup'ik Apprenticeship III 3 credits

  5. Minimum credits required 30

Major—A.A.S. Degree

  1. Complete the general university requirements.
  2. Complete the A.A.S. degree requirements.
  3. Complete the following program (major) requirements:*

    or

    ESK 205 – Regaining Fluency in Yup'ik 3 credits

*Student must earn a C grade or better in each course.
