Alaska is a great laboratory for environmental chemistry. The environment in the Arctic is continuing to change and impacts of global systems are first felt in Alaska. Our understanding of the underlying mechanisms of the transport of contaminants is far from complete, and solutions to this and other fascinating environmental problems beckon researchers to the Arctic.

The environmental chemistry program emphasizes an understanding of the chemical principles involved in natural processes. The program provides academic and research experience for graduate students who are interested in careers in this growing scientific discipline. The program utilizes faculty from many UAF departments and research institutes.

The environmental chemistry program may be especially attractive to students interested in working with policy makers. Environmental problems currently under study include the transport of gases such as NO2 and O3 related to arctic haze, indoor air pollution, health effect biomarkers, understanding the sources of particulate matter and mobility of metals in aquatic systems.

Graduate Program—M.S. Degree

1. Complete the general university requirements.
2. Complete the master’s degree requirements.
3. Complete a thesis.
4. Minimum credits required 30

Graduate Program—Ph.D. Degree

1. Complete the general university requirements.
2. Complete the Ph.D. degree requirements.
3. Complete program courses.
4. Complete 4 electives.
5. Minimum credits required 18
