Elementary German I and II (5+0) h

Introduction to the language and culture: development of competence and performance in the language through understanding, recognition and use of linguistic structures; increasing emphasis on listening comprehension and speaking; basic vocabulary of approximately 1,000 words; exploration of the cultural dimension, implicitly through language, and explicitly through texts and audiovisual materials.

Conversational German I (3+0) h

Oral skills improvement. Includes group work, presentations, skits, discussions and vocabulary to improve speaking on specific topics. (Prerequisites: GER 102 or equivalent or permission of instructor. Does not satisfy core curriculum or foreign language major requirements.)

Intermediate German I and II (3+0) h

Continuation of GER 102. Increasing emphasis on reading ability and cultural material. Conducted in German. (Prerequisite: GER 102 or equivalent.)

Studies in the Culture of the German Speaking World (3+0) h

Study of the cultures of the German speaking world. (Prerequisites: GER 301 or equivalent; junior standing or permission of instructor. Next offered: 2003 - 04. Course may be repeated for credit if topic varies.)

Studies of German Literature (3+0) h

Intensive study of authors, literary texts, movements, genres, themes and/or critical approaches. (Prerequisites: GER 302 or equivalent and junior standing, or permission of instructor. Next offered: 2002-03. Course may be repeated for credit if topic varies.)


GER 460 (3 Credits) As Demand Warrants
History of German Film (3+0) h
(Cross-listed with JRN 460)

In-depth study of a representative selection of films from the 1920's to the present, taught in English and German (films will be in German with English subtitles). Students of German will have a special discussion session in German and will do reading and writing in German. (Prerequisite: Junior standing or permission of instructor.)

Intensive course focusing on topics not covered in GER 431 or GER 432. (Prerequisites: GER 302 or equivalent; junior standing, or permission of instructor. Course may be repeated for credit if topic varies.)


GER 488 (3 Credits) As Demand Warrants
Individual Study: Senior Project h

Designed to permit the student to demonstrate ability to work with the language and the culture through the analysis and presentation, in the language, of a problem chosen by the student in consultation with the department. The student must apply for senior project and submit a project outline by the end of the 6th week of the semester preceding the semester of graduation. Offered normally in the semester preceding the student's graduation. Conducted in German. (Prerequisites: At least 10 credits in upper division German or permission of instructor.)
