Emergency Medical Services

EMS 103 (3 Credits) Fall, Spring
Emergency Trauma Training First Responder (3+0)

Designed to provide basic emergency care knowledge and skills to the student who will provide the first emergency care. The objective of the first person on the emergency scene will be to recognize the needs of the victim and deliver quality care to the patient, minimizing discomfort and preventing further complications. Laboratory fee: $50.00.


EMS 105 (1 Credit) Fall, Spring
Emergency Trauma Training Refresher (1+0)

For individuals who have been previously certified in Emergency Trauma Training (40 hrs.). Certification is valid for two years. (Prerequisite: EMS 103 or ETT Certification which may not be expired more than one calendar year.)


EMS 115 (1 Credit) As Demand Warrants
Basic Trauma Life Support (B.T.L.S.) (1+0)

Provides the first line of life support to the trauma patient as encountered in situ and to maintain life until the patient is handed off to the next level of medical help.


EMS 119 (6 Credits) Fall, Spring
EMT: Emergency Medical Technician I (5+3)
(Cross-listed with ARSK 119)

Techniques to administer lifesaving first aid and operate an ambulance. Upon successful completion of this course, the student will meet the Alaska requirements for certification as an Emergency Medical Technician. Materials fee: $100.00.


EMS 124 (1 Credit) As Demand Warrants
EMT: Emergency Medical Technician Refresher (1+0)

Review of basic skills and emergency medical procedures at the Basic EMT 1, 2 or 3 level. Covers emergency medical care procedural changes, newly developed equipment and its use, changes in State licensure or other medical-legal requirements. Materials fee: $50.00. (Prerequisite: EMT 1, 2 or 3 certification that may not be expired more than one calendar year.)


EMS 135 (1 Credit) As Demand Warrants
Aeromedical Evacuations in Alaska (1+0)

History of Alaska aeromedical transport; physiological aspects of pressure and atmosphere; physical effects of flight on the patient and escort; aircraft and equipment considerations; legal aspects of air transport; effects of aeromedical transport on specific medical situations.


EMS 180 (8 Credits) Alternate Semesters
Paramedicine I (7+2+15)

Introduction to emergency medical services (EMS) roles and responsibilities. Emphasis on anatomy and physiology of the circulatory, respiratory and nervous systems and related rescue procedures. (Prerequisite: EMS 119. Note: Requires strength to carry victims, good use of hands and fingers, good coordination, good judgement, emotional stability, and the ability to work confidently under pressure.)


EMS 182 (8 Credits) Alternate Semesters
Paramedicine II (6+4+15)

Cardiac rhythms, pharmacology and advanced cardiac life support. Graded Pass/Fail. (Prerequisite: EMS 119. Note: Requires strength to carry victims, good use of hands and fingers, good coordination, good judgement, emotional stability, and the ability to work confidently under pressure.)


EMS 186 (4 Credits) Alternate Semesters
Clinical Rotation I (0+8+4)

Perform paramedic skills in the hospital departments of emergency, intensive care, and surgery. (Prerequisites: EMS 180 and 182. Note: Requires strength to carry victims, good use of hands and fingers, good coordination, good judgement, emotional stability, and the ability to work confidently under pressure.)


EMS 215 (1 Credit) As Demand Warrants
Basic Life Support Instructor (1+0)

The American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) Instructor's course provides the AHA/BLS student the opportunity to acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to instruct and evaluate potential BLS providers. This course balances what information to teach with how to teach BLS. The BLS Instructor student will be monitored during the first class she/he teaches by the BLS Instructor Trainer. (Prerequisite: Basic Life Support certified.)


EMS 230 (3 Credits) As Demand Warrants
EMT: Emergency Medical Technician II (3+0)

Improvement of EMT skills in trauma intervention for the seriously injured patient through advanced techniques in fluid therapy. Use of MAST pants, utilization of specific drug therapy and advanced airway care covered. Materials fee: $115.00. (Prerequisite: EMT 1 certification as described in State EMT regulations; 7AAC26.010.)


EMS 231 (2 Credits) As Demand Warrants
Emergency Medical Technician III (1.5+1.5)

Introduction to basic cardiac anatomy and physiology, cardiac electrophysiology, recognition and treatment of basic lethal arrythmias, use of defibrillator monitor, use of morphine, lidocaine, and epinephrine 1:1000. Recognition and treatment of extremity pain due to isolated trauma. (Prerequisite: EMT 2 certification as described in State EMT regulations; 7AAC26.010.)


EMS 247 A, B (2 Credits) As Demand Warrants
Arctic Survival (1+2)

Basic survival skills and techniques needed in northern latitudes. Prepares students to face survival situations in an arctic environment and enables them to maintain equipment, skills, and attitudes in a state of readiness. Includes 1 credit in lecture, 1 in practicum; students must take lecture portion to be eligible for practicum.


EMS 271 (9 Credits) Alternate Semesters
Paramedicine III (4+10+13)

General patient assessment, assessment and management of medical emergencies and medevac escort. (Prerequisites: EMS 180 and 182. Note: Requires strength to carry victims, good use of hands and fingers, good coordination, good judgement, emotional stability, and the ability to work confidently under pressure.)


EMS 275 (4 Credits) Alternate Semesters
Clinical Rotation II (0+8+4)

Perform paramedic skills in the hospital departments of emergency, intensive care, surgery, labor and delivery, pediatrics and psychiatry. (Prerequisites: EMS 186 and 271. Note: Requires strength to carry victims, good use of hands and fingers, good coordination, good judgement, emotional stability, and the ability to work confidently under pressure.)


EMS 277 (3 Credits) Alternate Semesters
Clinical Rotation III (0+6+3)

Perform paramedic skills in the hospital departments of emergency, intensive care, surgery, labor and delivery, pediatrics, psychiatry, and air ambulance services. (Prerequisites: EMS 186 and 271. Note: Requires strength to carry victims, good use of hands and fingers, good coordination, good judgement, emotional stability, and the ability to work confidently under pressure.)


EMS 283 (12 Credits) Alternate Semesters
Paramedic Internship (0+36)

Prehospital field experience under the guidance of a paramedic preceptor on an advanced life support ambulance. Interns perform all aspects of paramedic care. (Prerequisites: EMS 275 and 277. Note: Requires strength to carry victims, good use of hands and fingers, good coordination, good judgement, emotional stability, and the ability to work confidently under pressure.)


EMS 287 (3 Credits) Fall, Summer, As Demand Warrants
Update in Paramedicine (2+2+3)

Integration of paramedicine knowledge and techniques with evaluation of applied skills. (Prerequisite: Current U.S. paramedic license. Note: Requires strength to carry victims, good use of hands and fingers, good coordination, good judgement, emotional stability, and the ability to work confidently under pressure.)
