Computer Information and Office Systems

Computer Information and Office Systems (CIOS) courses are the courses required by the following: Microcomputer Support Specialist (A.A.S. degree), Office Management and Technology (certificate and A.A.S. degree), and Applied Business, Applied Business Management, Applied Accounting, and Accounting Technician (certificate and A.A.S. degree). CIOS courses also meet the computing skills requirement for the UAF A.A. and A.A.S. degrees and certificates. CIOS classes may apply to the computer application specialty of the applied business degree.


CIOS 100 (1 Credit) As Demand Warrants
Introduction to Personal Computers (1+0)

Overview of the three most popular uses of the personal computer: word processing, data base management and electronic spreadsheets. Provides a basic understanding of how the computer works and how it can aid the student at school and work.


CIOS 103 (1 - 3 Credits) As Demand Warrants
Computer Survey (1 - 3+0)

An introduction to the world of computers emphasizing microcomputers. Provides computer terminology and how to use computers as a tool to make work easier and to extend the reach of the mind.


CIOS 105 (1 - 3 Credits) As Demand Warrants
Computer Software Application (1 - 3+0)

Extensive coverage of a specific microcomputer application.


CIOS 106 (1 - 3 Credits) As Demand Warrants
Keyboarding I/Beginning Typewriting (1 - 3+0)

Basic keyboarding skills with emphasis on correct techniques and development of speed and accuracy. Introduction to centering, typing of personal and business letters, envelopes, simple tables and manuscripts. For those with no previous typing training. May be taken in 1 credit segments in the Office Professions lab.


CIOS 107 (1 Credit) As Demand Warrants
Typing Skill Building (1+0)

Supervised training to improve speed and/or accuracy on straight and numerical copy. May be repeated up to 3 credits. (Prerequisite: CIOS 106 or permission of instructor.)


CIOS 108 (3 Credits) As Demand Warrants
Keyboarding II/Intermediate Typewriting (3+0)

Instruction and training to attain at least minimal typing skill, experience and knowledge necessary for typist beginning an office career. Lab arranged. (Prerequisite: CIOS 106 or one year high school typing or permission of instructor.)


CIOS 109 (3 Credits) As Demand Warrants
Keyboarding III/Advanced Typewriting (3+0)

Training and practice to achieve level of typing skill, experience, knowledge and production output required in business office positions. Lab arranged. (Prerequisite: CIOS 108 or permission of instructor.)


CIOS 110 (1 - 3 Credits) As Demand Warrants
Microcomputer Operating Systems (1 - 3+0)

Comprehensive exploration of a current microcomputer operating system: use, configuring, installing and administering. Topics include end-user and technical support. (Recommended: CIOS 150 or equivalent computer literacy including saving/retrieving files, use of office applications, Internet and e-mail.)


CIOS 111 (1 - 2 Credits) As Demand Warrants
Computer Software for Beginners (1 - 2+0)

Overview of computer hardware and software. Demonstrations and hands-on experience with telecommunications, word-processing, spreadsheets, data base management and tutorial software.


CIOS 116 (3 Credits) As Demand Warrants
Business Math Using Calculators (3+0)

Provides basic operating knowledge of the electronic calculator for such applications as discounting, amount and percent of change, prorating interest, commissions and payroll. Development of proficiency in use of machines for initial job placement. Open lab.


CIOS 130 (1 - 3 Credits) Fall, Spring
Microcomputer Word Processing (1 - 3+0)

Comprehensive exploration of topics related to using microcomputer word processors. Includes creating, formatting and revising documents; using proofreading and editing tools; implementing styles; using templates; and customizing the application. (Recommended: CIOS 150 or equivalent computer literacy including saving/retrieving files, use of office applications, Internet and e-mail.)


CIOS 131 (1 - 3 Credits) As Demand Warrants
WordPerfect (1 - 3+0)

Provides practice on an IBM/PC or Macintosh computer using WordPerfect software. The applications cover basic, intermediate and advanced topics. (Prerequisite: Keyboarding speed of 35 wpm or permission of instructor.)


CIOS 132 (1 - 3 Credits) Fall, Spring
Microsoft Word (1 - 3+0)

Provides instruction on an IBM/PC or Macintosh computer using Microsoft Word software. The applications cover basic, intermediate and advanced topics. (Prerequisite: Keyboarding speed of 35 wpm or permission of instructor.)

Microcomputer Presentation Software (1 - 3+0)

Designing effective presentations. Includes organizing and designing an effective presentation of information using current microcomputer software. (Recommended: CIOS 150 or equivalent skills.)


CIOS 135 (1 - 3 Credits) As Demand Warrants
Microcomputer Spreadsheets (1 - 3+0)

Comprehensive exploration of topics related to using microcomputer spreadsheets. Includes creating, formatting and revising spreadsheets; creating formulas, graphics and charts; and using spreadsheets to organize, analyze and query information. (Recommended: CIOS 150 or equivalent computer literacy including saving/retrieving files, use of office applications, Internet and e-mail.)


CIOS 146 (1 - 3 Credits) As Demand Warrants
Using the Internet (1 - 3+0)

Presentation of the Internet. Includes using and configuring current world wide web and e-mail tools; developing searching strategies; current and future trends; and basic web authoring. Also available via Independent Learning. (Recommended: Basic computer literacy, including saving and retrieving files and using basic software.)


CIOS 150 (1 - 3 Credits) As Demand Warrants
Computer Business Applications (1 - 3+0)

Basic introduction to using a computer and office applications. Includes the operating system, how to save/retrieve files; word processing, document creation and formatting; spreadsheets (basic formulas and functions); and the Internet (browsing, searching and e-mail). (Provides basic computer literacy and prepares for CIOS 110, 130, 134 and 146. No previous computer experience is required.)


CIOS 152 (1 - 3 Credits) As Demand Warrants
Introduction to Microcomputers in Small Businesses (1 - 3+0)

Microcomputers used in small business or professional practice by owners or employees. Overview of computers, uses and means of evaluation when purchasing equipment. Does not satisfy certificate or degree requirements.

Business English (3+0)

Comprehensive review of grammar, punctuation, capitalization and spelling, with emphasis on business and office occupations.


CIOS 161 (1 Credit) As Demand Warrants
Proofreading (1+0)

Provides instruction and practice in finding, making and correcting errors commonly made but often overlooked in business communication. Practice in recognizing frequently made errors, where they are likely to occur and special techniques of finding them. Open lab.

Alphabetic Shorthand (3+0)

Introduces alphabetic shorthand, including alphabet, shortcuts, phasing, and other abbreviating devices.

Alphabetic Filing (0+3)

Mastery and use of ARMA filing rules as they apply to alphabetic, subject, numeric and geographic filing.


CIOS 165 (3 Credits) As Demand Warrants
Office Procedures (3+0)

Duties and responsibilities of general office employees including filing, processing mail, telephone communication, meeting the public, office supplies, banking, employment procedures and grooming.


CIOS 200 (3 Credits) As Demand Warrants
Medical Terminology (3+0)

Study of medical terminology, including analysis of its roots and origins. Anatomical, diagnostic, operative, and laboratory terminology of the human body systems, and selected medical specialties. Emphasis on spelling and pronunciation.


CIOS 205 (2 Credits) As Demand Warrants
Medical Typing (2+0)

Provides training for employment as an office worker, particularly as a forms typist, in a hospital or medical bureau or office or toward qualifications as a medical assistant or secretary. (Prerequisite: CIOS 108 or demonstration of equivalent proficiency.)

Legal Keyboarding (3+0)

Provides legal procedures background and skill improvement in typewriting and transcription. Emphasis on understanding legal processes as well as developing expertise in typewriting and office procedures. (Prerequisite: CIOS 108 or permission of instructor.)


CIOS 207 (2 Credits) As Demand Warrants
Machine Transcription (2+0)

Training in machine transcription with emphasis on mailable copies. Review of language skills and vocabulary included. (Prerequisite: CIOS 108 or permission of instructor.)


CIOS 208 (2 Credits) As Demand Warrants
Medical Machine Transcription (2+0)

Instruction and practice in formatting medical papers including a Medicare form, an admission form, a dental report; preparing patient histories, medical reports, file cards and other medical documents. Practice in transcribing from machine dictation and in using medical terminology correctly. (Prerequisite: CIOS 108 and CIOS 207.)


CIOS 209 (2 Credits) As Demand Warrants
Legal Machine Transcription (2+0)

Instruction and practice in formatting legal papers including a lease, bill of sale, subpoena, stipulations, interrogatories, notices and various types of orders. Transcription from machine dictation; using the language of the law correctly.


CIOS 210 (1 - 3 Credits) As Demand Warrants
Hardware and Software Configuration and Troubleshooting (1 - 3+0)

Fundamental hardware and software configuration and troubleshooting. Includes installing, removing, and configuring computer hardware components; installing and configuring software applications and operating systems; diagnosing hardware and software problems; and developing troubleshooting and configuration procedures (Recommended: CIOS 110 or equivalent skills.)


CIOS 211 (1 - 3 Credits) As Demand Warrants
Computer Technical Support (1 - 3+0)

Prepares students to provide technical support to computer users. Skills include: diagnosing problems, researching solutions, meeting user needs, developing training materials, and giving workshops and lessons. Course may be repeated for credit. (Prerequisite: Comprehensive experience using the Internet.)

Advanced Microcomputer Operating Systems (3+0)

In-depth and comprehensive technical class covering operating system skills and concepts. Course may be repeated for credit. (Prerequisites: CIOS 110 or equivalent skills.)

Computer processing of accounting transactions. Software packages, microcomputer systems and hardware, computer terminology, system analysis, and actual computer operations in accounting. (Prerequisite: ABUS 142 or ACCT 161.)

Advanced concepts of word processing using various software. (Prerequisite: CIOS 130.)

Entry-level desktop publishing course introducing the chief features of a page layout program. Step-by-step instructions to create at least three simple publications. (Prerequisite: Previous computer experience.)

Desktop Publishing (1 - 3+0)

Publication design and layout using desktop publishing software. Includes integrating text and graphics, page layout design, scanning and basic image editing. Also available via Independent Learning. CIOS 234 (1 - 3 Credits) Fall, Spring
Advanced Desktop Publishing (1 - 3+0)

Utilization of the advanced features of a page layout program to create camera-ready mechanicals for fliers, brochures and newsletters. Exploration of the elements of good design and the requirements for professional publishing. (Prerequisite: CIOS 233 or permission of instructor.)


CIOS 240 (1 - 3 Credits) As Demand Warrants
Microcomputer Databases (1 - 3+0)

Comprehensive introduction to microcomputer databases. Includes basic database concepts; how to maintain and update databases; how to build and use queries and forms; and how to build reports. Introduction to database design. (Recommended: CIOS 150; and CIOS 130 or 135 or equivalent skills.)

Advanced Databases (1 - 3+0)

An in-depth, technical and comprehensive covering varied database skills and concepts. Course may be repeated for credit. (Requirements: CIOS 240 or equivalent skills.)


CIOS 245 (1 - 4 Credit) As Demand Warrants
Networking and Communications (1 - 4+0)

Design and implementation of networks in small- to medium-sized environments. Includes basic networking concepts; LANs and WANs; network design planning, implementation and troubleshooting. (Recommended: CIOS 110 and 210; or equivalent skills.)


CIOS 246 (1 - 3 Credits) As Demand Warrants
Advanced Internet (1 - 3+0)

Exploration of advanced Internet topics. Includes methods of Internet access; setting up and maintaining Internet servers, authoring and site management tools; TCP/IP, Internet security, and the implementation and use of Internet technology. (Recommended: CIOS 110 and 245; or equivalent skills.)

Advanced Networking and Communications (1 - 4+0)

In-depth technical and comprehensive coverage of networking and communications skills and concepts. (Recommended: CIOS 245 or equivalent skills. May be repeated.)


CIOS 251 (1 - 3 Credits) As Demand Warrants
Integrated Software (1 - 3+0)

Focusing on microcomputer applications that integrate multiple tasks into a single tool. Emphasis on the integrating and combining of information from multiple computer applications. (Prerequisite: Prior to taking this advanced class, the student is expected to have competence in specific applications and be comfortable using Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Access.)


CIOS 255 (1 - 3 Credits) As Demand Warrants
Microcomputer Graphics (1 - 3+0)

Comprehensive survey of microcomputer graphics using a graphics application. Includes use of professional-level graphics programs to create sophisticated graphics for a variety of uses. Also available via Independent Learning. (Recommended: CIOS 150 or equivalent computer literacy including saving/retrieving files, use of office applications, Internet and e-mail.)

Internet Authoring and Design (1 - 3+0)

Comprehensive survey of a professional authoring tool to create documents for effective distribution through the Internet. Includes design and preparation of documents for electronic distribution. Also available via Independent Learning. (Recommended: CIOS 146 and 150 or equivalent computer literacy including saving/retrieving files, use of office applications, Internet and e-mail.)


CIOS 260 (3 Credits) As Demand Warrants
Business Communications (3+0)

Composition and evaluation of various kinds of common communications between a business person and associates, customers and dealers. Included are interoffice memos, letters, reports and oral communications. (Prerequisite: CIOS 160 or permission of instructor.)

Filing/Records Management (3+0)

Instruction in basic alphabetic storage with filing rules and cross-referencing and procedures for retrieving records manually. Includes adaptations of the alphabetic storage method including geographic, numeric and subject; storing and retrieving special records (card files, visible records, microrecords); organization and operation of records management programs and control of records systems.

Office Management (3+0)

Review of procedures, basic attitudes and skills required of a secretary. Range of opportunities for secretarial advancement through knowledge relating to ergonomics, automation, employee relations, productivity, etc. (Prerequisite: CIOS 165 or permission of instructor.)

Microcomputer Programming (1 - 3+0)

Advanced microcomputer programming. Focus on using application programming languages. Supplementing and integrating computer applications with built-in programming tools. (Recommended: CIOS 130, 135 and 240; or equivalent skills.)

Independent Project (1 - 3+0)

Project will include learning a new microcomputer application, applying the application to significant problems, and demonstrating the result to other computer users. (Prerequisites: Competence in the use of microcomputer applications and operating systems.)

Cooperative Work Experience

On-the-job training related to occupational objectives. Weekly seminar with coordinator required. (Prerequisites: Permission of instructor and 12 credits in CIOS courses.)


CIOS 288 (1 - 2 Credits) As Demand Warrants
CPS Review

Prepares students for the CPS (Certified Professional Secretary) examination. Review sessions offered in six areas covered by the exam: behavioral science in business, business law, economics and management, accounting, office administration and office technology. One credit is granted for any combination of three of the above review topic areas.


CIOS 501 (1 Credit) Ongoing Independent Learning
Electronic Mail and On-line Services (1+0)

Introduction to telecommunications using a personal computer and modem. Utilize the services available through the University of Alaska Computer Network including electronic mail, SLED library services, Alaskanet, and Legislative Information Office system. Prepare research paper on a telecommunications topic and submit it electronically. Requires access to a computer and modem. 13 Lessons, 0 Exams.


CIOS 502 (1 Credit) Ongoing Independent Learning
Using the Internet

Accessing Internet services including USENET, a global electronic bulletin board; TELNET to log on to other computer systems; GOPHER and Worldwide Web menu systems; ARCHIE file searches; FTP file transfers; binary file uploads/downloads; and listservs. 10 Lessons, 0 Exams. CIOS 503 (1 Credit) Ongoing Independent Learning
Applying Telecommunications (1+0)

Design and implementation of an approved project using telecommunications in the classroom or work place, or an in-depth research paper. 6 Lessons, 0 Exams. (Prerequisite: CIOS 502.)
