WHAT IS CAREER ASSESSMENT

In order to explore majors and work opportunities, it is important to first gain an understanding of your interests, values, strengths, and family/cultural influences that impact the decision-making process. Our career counselors can help with this exploration process.

When you meet with a career counselor, you might be asked questions about your previous experiences and interests. This can help both you and the counselor get a better understanding of what is important to you.  From there, the counselor will work with you to select activities that will help you gain a better understanding of yourself, your academic interests and the world of work. Some of these activities might include standardized inventories that will give you feedback on general themes as well as specific occupational titles to consider. They may give you ideas you have never considered or confirm your current areas of interest. The following are examples of some of the activities and standardized inventories used at Career Services:

Main assessments used at Career Services:

Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI): This personality instrument helps indicate your preferred manner of taking in and evaluating information and will identify your preferred style of working, decision-making and communicating. It can help you evaluate how you are likely to operate in a particular setting and job. Make an appointment with a UAF career counselor to take the inventory online and go over the results. The cost for the inventory and discussion is $20 for UAF students and alumni. The cost for individuals not affiliated with UAF is $50.

Strong Interest Inventory (SII): This inventory assesses your interests and compares them to those of people working in various occupations. You will receive feedback on your strongest interest themes as well as which occupational titles match these interests. You can then identify occupations and academic majors you would like to evaluate and explore.   Make an appointment with a UAF career counselor to take the inventory online and go over the results. The cost for the inventory and discussion is $20 for UAF students and alumni. The cost for individuals not affiliated with UAF is $50.

Other assessments/instruments:

  • O*Net: This online system serves as the nation’s primary source of occupational information, providing comprehensive information on key attributes and characteristics of workers and occupations. (Career Services’ most used resource with students! Be sure to check it out when writing resumes and preparing for interviews.)
  • Ideal Day: This activity helps you identify the types of activities you would like to pursue in your life after graduation.
  • Type Focus: This is a free tool that uses the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator terminology. A more detailed report is available for a fee. For best results, see a trained career counselor in Career Services for a more in-depth facilitation.
  • Career Lift Off: This assessment assesses your career interests and provides you with a detailed profile and narrative report on your career interests. See a UAF career counselor to discuss taking this assessment at a reduced rate.
