Built in the 1970s, the greenhouse on North Koyukuk Drive is an official Agricultural and Forestry Experiment Station facility.
The West Ridge Greenhouse provides space for natural resource management classes on plant science through the School of Natural Resources and Agricultural Sciences. Research is conducted at the greenhouse on how plants react to different types of light exposure. Crops and plants change yearly in the greenhouse. Researchers help develop strains of short grains (oats, barley and wheat) that thrive in subarctic conditions and develop strains of perennials, such as strawberries, suitable for the local climate.
