The Large Animal Research Station (LARS) on Yankovich Road was created in 1979 with a major grant from the National Science Foundation, Office of Polar Programs to establish a location close to  the university where research could take place on large ungulates in captivity. Current animal populations at LARS includes muskoxen, caribou and reindeer. Living accommodations at the site are available to visiting scientists, graduate students, visiting scholars and interns.
