Duckering Building

The William Elmhirst Duckering Building was built in 1964 and originally housed the institutes of Marine Science and Arctic Biology; the College of Business, Economics, and Government; the State of Alaska Highway Department; the departments of Mathematics, Engineering, Physics, Electrical Engineering; and others. On Feb. 23, 2002, after more than a year of extensive revisions, the Duckering Building was rededicated. Today the building serves as home to instructional and research programs in engineering. William Elmhirst Duckering earned a bachelor's degree in 1903 and his civil engineering degree in 1916 from the University of Washington. Afterwards, he taught engineering classes and ended his career at the University of Alaska as dean.
