Financial Aid

All ASRA financial aid is based on need first.

Aid is reserved for those who cannot otherwise afford to attend. We are always looking for donors to help a student.

If you know of a potential donor, please have them contact us.

To apply for financial aid, fill out the form at the link below for the award you are seeking.

Financial aid forms MUST be on file with the application form in order to be considered.

All information on the financial aid form is confidential.

FINANCIAL AID FORM Closed - ASRA is full, and no longer accepting applications for 2009.

There are more students who need aid than ASRA can accommodate. The financial aid awards committee reads the essays and supplementary information on the application carefully to help distinguish those with greatest need. ASRA is also looking for students with potential to change the world in a positive way. We encourage financial aid applicants to write their essays with this in mind, and address specific awards in their application. For example, the Doug Schamel Fund is looking for students with a passion for science and sharing it with others. The Chancellor is looking for good citizens.

Note that some scholarships are open to all applicants with financial need, and others are restricted. For example, some are for rural students, others for specific modules.

New York Life Awards

The New York Life Foundation has generously offered awards for nine rural Alaskan students. These awards cover tuition and travel from your home to Fairbanks and back.

Requirements for this award:
You must be a resident of rural Alaska.

Douglas Schamel Memorial Fund Awards

Doug Schamel was the Director of ASRA from 2002 until his untimely death in 2005. He was passionate about science and education, especially when it involved sharing with young students. Doug's life continues to be an inspiration, and he was a tireless advocate on behalf of students.

The Douglas Schamel Memorial Fund helps students who have a passion for sharing their love of science.

The Schamel Fund is in need of donations! To donate, go to the UAF Giving Page and choose "other" in the menu. Specify that the funds go to the the "Doug Schamel Memorial Fund spendable" account.

Chancellor's Awards

The Chancellor's office is offering financial aid for students who are academic achievers and good citizens. Chancellor Brian Rogers is particularly interested in helping those who plan to explore UAF as a possible college choice. Successful applicants will describe what makes them stand out among their peers. Grades are not the only criteria, and weight will be placed on community service and success in areas outside academics. We are looking for students who will be shining examples to others, and who plan to make a difference in the world.

ASRA Awards

ASRA is searching far and wide for donations. This year we will be offering several small awards to assist families that need a little help paying the tution fee.

Interior Alaska AHEC (Area Health Education Center) Awards

These awards are for students enrolled in the Biomedicine or Human Physiology modules. Four awards of $500 each are available to students from the rural villages of Interior Alaska.

To apply for this award interview two people in your community who are involved in health care. The interview questions are listed below:

  • Who is available to help when an emergency happens?
  • What kind of training or education did they receive?
  • Tell something about the people you interview and how they are involved.
  • Where do people and children go for their regular check-ups?
  • What is the community clinic like? How many exam rooms, who works there, what kind of services can a patient get there, what hours is it open, etc?

The Lawson Family Award

This award is for one deserving Alaskan student who would like to attend a math or science module who would not otherwise be able to attend ASRA. The Lawsons believe that ASRA can change the life of a student in many positive ways.

Kenai River Sportfishing Association Awards

This award is for students in the Marine Biology module. Preference is given to Alaska residents living near the Kenai river, Cook Inlet or Southcentral Alaska.

Alaska Statewide PTA grants

The Alaska PTA has a small scholarship fund for students wishing to attend an academic camp. The grant application must be submitted through the Alaska PTA. Several ASRA students have received this grant in previous years.

Click here, and look for their "Grant" form.

Other sources of financial aid

We encourage all students to seek aid locally. ASRA is recognized as a positive academic experience by many organizations and individuals who may be willing to support a bright young student. Examples include village corporations, local busnesses, relatives, and more.

ASRA is working constantly to secure additional aid for students.
