ASRA 2009 IS FULL!

Applications are closed.

ASRA is open to students entering grades 8-12 in the fall, including students from outside of Alaska. There are two options available:

Residential option:

Residential students live on campus in a supervised UAF dormitory. All meals and snacks, and a wide variety of evening activities are included. Preference in admission is given residential students. Most students prefer the residential option, and there is space for 100 students.

Commuter option:

Commuter students do not live on campus. They receive lunch but not breakfast or dinner, and do not participate in evening activities. This option is for students who live in Fairbanks, and have evening commitments outside of ASRA. There is space for about 20 commuters.

Applying to ASRA requires filling out these forms online:

I.   Application Form - To be filled out online by the applying student.

II.  Reference Form - To be filled out online by the student's references.

III. Financial Aid Form (optional) - to be filled out online by the student's parent/guardian.

The Admissions Committee Considers the Following:

  1. Academic interest. We are looking for students who are curious and passionate about learning and who like challenges.
  2. Recommendations from mentors or teachers (via on-line form).
  3. Good citizenship. We are looking for students who are good team members who will have a positive influence on the world.
  4. Age and maturity. Older students are preferred for remote off campus modules. Instructors have some say in who they will take to remote areas.
  5. Gender. We try to have a mix of female and male students in a module. Our male/female ratio is about 50/50.
  6. Date of application. ASRA fills quickly - apply early! BUT NOTE:  ASRA is NOT filled on a first come, first served basis. Applications will be processed in batches, beginning in March. The first batch of applications will be processed and if there is room available after that, we will place another batch. Please see our application page for specific criteria.
  7. The essay is a very important part of the above selection process. We want to know what kind of person you are, and whether you will contribute to a positive experience for all.

Financial Aid

An optional financial aid application is available (access through the Financial Aid page). Financial aid must be requested at the time of application to be considered. Financial aid is limited, and ASRA cannot guarantee aid.
