ASRA :: Web & Digital Media Module

This module combines creativity with technology in a demanding hands-on experience in new media. Students will focus on two major projects during ASRA which will serve as online showcase of their newly acquired digital skill set:

• Students will explore the responsibilities of a reporter "beat". We will cover the basics of interviewing, photography and filmmaking. Students will report on other modules and will update the ASRA website with new pictures, movies, podcasts, and blogs that cover the day to day activities of ASRA.

• Students will produce an interactive science multimedia project. Students will create their own projects using Adobe's multimedia Flash (drawing, animation and interaction), and Apple's iLife creative suite of software. Students will make audio and video recordings. Finished projects will be submitted to Ira Flatow's Science Friday website and the ASRA website to be displayed online.

• If time allows we will explore other creative uses of multimedia, creating small projects unique to the individual student.

Students will create, edit, collect, organize and transform images and video for web page presentation (or distribution on DVD). Students will survey technologies including cascading style sheets (CSS), web feeds and aggregation. In addition to direct instruction and hands on class time, students will take part in tours and presentations exploring career options in the field. This will include presentations from local graphic designers and web programmers as well as tours of local businesses utilizing new media.
