ASRA :: Digital Photography Module

The Digital Photography module has an additional $250 course fee

The Digital photography module will serve as fast paced introduction to digital photography that will balance class lectures and discussions with practical lab/field experience and instructor feedback.

We’ll focus on one or two topics each day and follow those discussions with appropriate shooting venues where each student will have the opportunity to learn and practice beginning and advanced photographic skills discussed earlier. Each student will have access to a digital camera to produce digital images and access to a computer and software (Photo Mechanic and Adobe Photoshop CS 2) where she or he can review images and produce then process images for the web or for print. We’ll focus on “making” a picture as a conscious and creative effort rather than “taking” a picture.

As we discuss beginning and advanced photographic techniques we’ll have the opportunity to put them to practice in three specific areas: action/sports, portrait and documentary photography as well as more traditional still photography. There will be opportunities to work both alone and as a member of a team.

We plan on inviting some working professionals to visit and share their perspective on a particular area of photography.

We’ll use campus and the Patty Center as venues for action and sports photography. For portrait photography we’ll divide into two groups and set up two studios where each student will cycle through 4 major roles in portrait production. We’ll have both serious and creative opportunities.

For the documentary part we’ll journey to Denali Park and visit the Murie Science Center and the site where active work on the discovery of dinosaur tracks is occurring. Students will also have the opportunity to work with participants of one of the other modules to photographically document their work if they so desire.
