ASRA :: Insects Module

dragonflytrue_bugantlacewing

Insects are a fascinating and often misunderstood group of animals that are essential to our planet. Butterflies and bees pollinate plants. Beetles, flies, and other species break down waste materials. Wasps, ladybugs, and other predators control pest species that eat our crops. There are around 1 million named insect species on Earth, with many others yet to be discovered. Despite their importance, very little is known about the insects of Alaska!  Students can add to that knowledge by joining us on a journey of discovery, using the techniques of museum curators to learn about Alaska’s insects. Students will collect insects at Creamer’s Field and learn how to identify and prepare specimens at the Museum of the North. Students will also design and execute research projects. There will be additional field trips to observe and learn about insect ecology and behavior. We will be spending a lot of time outdoors!

Instructors:

  • Derek Sikes, Curator of Entomology, UA Museum of the North
  • Laura Conner, Director of Education, UA Museum of the North
  • Melissa Sikes, Program Director, Friends of Creamer’s Field
