MISSION STATEMENT:

 

The Atmospheric Science Graduate Program will provide scientists and professionals with the training and insight to understand and explore the physical, chemical and dynamical processes of the atmosphere.

GOAL STATEMENT:

We will maintain a program of high quality and produce scientists and professionals capable of solving current problems and anticipating future challenges in Atmospheric Sciences.

Upon completion of the program, graduates can function effectively in their area of expertise.

Atmospheric Sciences will maintain a strong reputation for producing well-trained graduates.
Graduates will be surveyed to identify program strengths and weaknesses.  These surveys will be used in department program development strategies.
Students will be capable of analyzing a problem, identifying the critical aspects, and devise appropriate methods to resolve the questions that arise.
Thesis will demonstrate the identification of and solution to research problems.

Committee will be surveyed after thesis defense.

Students will be surveyed.

Graduates will be successful in obtaining work, or progressing in their field.

PhD: 90% will be employed 1 year after graduation.

MS: 90% will be employed or admitted to a PhD program 1 year after graduation.
Graduates will be surveyed.
Demonstrated original thinking.
At least one first authored peer-reviewed publication for a PhD student and at least one conference abstract for an MS student.

PhD level students will produce one published or “in press” paper at time of degree completion.

MS level students will give a professional presentation with an abstract.
Students will have exposure communicating orally.
Graduate students will have the opportunity to practice effective public speaking.
Seminar quality will be evaluated.  Advisors will provide feedback on effectiveness of the presentations.
