Alaska Space Grant Program Grants Format

The Alaska Space Grant Program requests proposals for projects that will enhance the capabilities within Alaska for teaching, research, and educational outreach in aerospace-related disciplines.  Proposals are now being accepted in the following categories:
• ASGP Research Initiation Grants - These grants are intended to provide seed funding to develop new research programs in areas that will complement the established aerospace-related research programs at UAF and/or the student rocket program.
• ASGP Curriculum Development Grants - These grants are intended to provide seed funding for the development or expansion of the aerospace-related curriculum within either the university or the K-12 education system within Alaska.
• ASGP Classroom Materials Grants - These grants are intended to provide funding for the acquisition of aerospace-related materials for use in K-12 classrooms.
• ASGP Student Fellowships/Scholarships - These grants are intended to encourage students to pursue aerospace-related research projects at UAF.

This announcement requests proposals for Research Initiation Grants, Curriculum Development Grants, Classroom Materials Grants, and Student Fellowships/Scholarships. Short written proposals (maximum of 5 pages) should be submitted to the Alaska Space Grant Program Office by the TBA deadline.  The format required for each type of proposal is described in the following guidelines.

All proposals will be reviewed by the ASGP Board of Directors, or by a panel appointed by the Board.  Selections will be based on both the quality of the proposal and its potential for enhancing aerospace capabilities within Alaska.  Selections will be made by a to be determined date, with funding to be available after a to be announced datesubject to the availability of funds from the NASA National Space Grant College and Fellowship Program. Description

The Alaska Space Grant Program seeks proposals for Curriculum Development Grants for a one-year period beginning May 1, 2000. The maximum award level is $5,000. These grants are nonrenewable, but recipients will remain eligible to compete for grants in future years.

The Curriculum Development Grants are intended to provide seed funding for projects that enhance the teaching of aerospace-related topics within Alaska.  These projects may include development of new university-level courses with an aerospace emphasis, particularly in areas of remote sensing, space science, or engineering. Another category of projects suitable for funding under this program would be educational outreach programs that seek to recruit talented students into aerospace-related fields, particularly projects that bring aerospace-related topics into the curriculum of K-12 schools. Applicants are encouraged to discuss the suitability of a proposed project with the ASGP director or board members prior to submitting a formal proposal. Preference will be given to proposals that (1) leverage matching funds and follow-on resources from other sources,, (2) maximize the impact on the greatest number of participants, and/or (3) provide a lasting benefit in the form of curriculum enhancement materials or other deliverables that will continue to be used in the future. Recipients of these awards will required to share the results of their project with other educators through the ASGP On-line Teacher Resource Manual (http://www.uaf.edu/asgp).

Eligibility

All qualified employees of non-profit educational institutions in Alaska, or persons having a formal relationship with such an institution, except those serving on the ASGP Board of Directors, are eligible to apply for ASGP Curriculum Development Grants.

Proposal Format

Proposals should be concise (maximum of 5 pages) and contain the following sections:
1.  Proposed Activities - Include: (1) a clear statement of the objective of the proposed project, (2) a detailed outline of the proposed activities that would be undertaken with this grant, and (3) a discussion of the long term benefits for the teaching of aerospace-related topics within Alaska.
2. Budget - Include an itemized budget that justifies the need for the requested funds.  Foreign travel or the acquisition of non-expendable equipment is not permitted with funding from the NASA Space Grant College and Fellowship Program.
3. Evaluation Guidelines - Establish a set of guidelines by which the success or failure of the proposed curriculum development project can be judged.  At the end of the one-year funding period, grant recipients are required to submit a final report that assesses the success of the project in terms of these self-imposed guidelines.
4. Qualifications  - Briefly list the credentials of the principal investigator, which are relevant to the proposed project.
