Alaska Space Grant Program Grants Format

The Alaska Space Grant Program requests proposals for projects that will enhance the capabilities within Alaska for teaching, research, and educational outreach in aerospace-related disciplines.  Proposals are now being accepted in the following categories:
• ASGP Research Initiation Grants - These grants are intended to provide seed funding to develop new research programs in areas that will complement the established aerospace-related research programs at UAF and/or the student rocket program.
• ASGP Curriculum Development Grants - These grants are intended to provide seed funding for the development or expansion of the aerospace-related curriculum within either the university or the K-12 education system within Alaska.
• ASGP Classroom Materials Grants - These grants are intended to provide funding for the acquisition of aerospace-related materials for use in K-12 classrooms.
• ASGP Student Fellowships/Scholarships - These grants are intended to encourage students to pursue aerospace-related research projects at UAF.

This announcement requests proposals for Research Initiation Grants, Curriculum Development Grants, Classroom Materials Grants, and Student Fellowships/Scholarships. Short written proposals (maximum of 5 pages) should be submitted to the Alaska Space Grant Program Office by the TBA deadline.  The format required for each type of proposal is described in the following guidelines.

All proposals will be reviewed by the ASGP Board of Directors, or by a panel appointed by the Board.  Selections will be based on both the quality of the proposal and its potential for enhancing aerospace capabilities within Alaska.  Selections will be made by a to be determined date, with funding to be available after a to be announced datesubject to the availability of funds from the NASA National Space Grant College and Fellowship Program. Description

The Alaska Space Grant Program seeks proposals for Research Initiation Grants for a one-year period.  The maximum award level is $5,000.  These grants are nonrenewable, but recipients will remain eligible to compete for grants in future years.

The Research Initiation Grants are intended to provide seed funding for initiating new research projects in aerospace-related disciplines at UAF.  Preference will be given to projects which: 1) leverage matching funds and follow-on resources from other sources, 2) enhance the infrastructure at UAF for research in aerospace-related disciplines, 3) establish liaisons with aerospace industry or government organizations, and/or 4) actively involve students in the research project.  The ASGP Research Initiation Grants may also be used to fund the writing of proposals for substantial follow-on grants, or to develop collaborations with other researchers.  The Alaska Space Grant Program Office can assist researchers in locating contacts within the NASA system for arranging summer faculty appointments or developing long-term relationships. Proposals for research projects that complement the activities of the Student Rocket Program or the Poker Flat Research Range are particularly encouraged. Applicants are encouraged to discuss the suitability of a proposed project with the ASGP director or board members prior to submitting a formal proposal.

Eligibility

All faculty members of the University of Alaska Fairbanks, except those serving on the ASGP Board of Directors, are eligible to apply for Research Initiation Grants.

Proposal Format

Proposals should be concise (maximum of 5 pages) and contain the following sections:
1.  Proposed Research - Include: (1) a clear statement of the objective, (2) a detailed outline of the proposed activities that would be undertaken with this grant (e.g., research, proposal writing, etc.),  (3) a discussion of the potential for follow-on funding from other sources, and (4) a discussion of the project deliverables and potential long-term benefits for aerospace-related disciplines within Alaska.
2. Student Participation - Discuss the level at which students will participate in the research.
3. Budget - Include an itemized budget that justifies the need for the requested funds.  Foreign travel or the acquisition of non-expendable equipment is not permitted with funding from the NASA Space Grant College and Fellowship Program.
4. Evaluation Guidelines - Establish a set of guidelines by which the success or failure of the proposed research project can be judged. At the end of the one-year funding period, grant recipients are required to submit a final report that assesses the success of the project in terms of these self-imposed guidelines.
5. Qualifications - Briefly list the credentials of the principal investigator that are relevant to the proposed project.

The Alaska Space Grant Program seeks proposals for Curriculum Development Grants for a one-year period beginning May 1, 2000. The maximum award level is $5,000. These grants are nonrenewable, but recipients will remain eligible to compete for grants in future years.

The Curriculum Development Grants are intended to provide seed funding for projects that enhance the teaching of aerospace-related topics within Alaska.  These projects may include development of new university-level courses with an aerospace emphasis, particularly in areas of remote sensing, space science, or engineering. Another category of projects suitable for funding under this program would be educational outreach programs that seek to recruit talented students into aerospace-related fields, particularly projects that bring aerospace-related topics into the curriculum of K-12 schools. Applicants are encouraged to discuss the suitability of a proposed project with the ASGP director or board members prior to submitting a formal proposal. Preference will be given to proposals that (1) leverage matching funds and follow-on resources from other sources,, (2) maximize the impact on the greatest number of participants, and/or (3) provide a lasting benefit in the form of curriculum enhancement materials or other deliverables that will continue to be used in the future. Recipients of these awards will required to share the results of their project with other educators through the ASGP On-line Teacher Resource Manual (http://www.uaf.edu/asgp).

Description

The Alaska Space Grant Program will award several Graduate Student Fellowships and Undergraduate Student Scholarships on a competitive basis for the  2000-2001 academic year subject to the availability of funds. Funding from these awards will be available for a one-year period beginning on May 1, 2000. The size of the award will be commensurate with the scope of the proposed project, although the majority of awards will be less than $5000. The purpose of this program is to encourage students to participate in aerospace research projects and pursue aerospace careers. Applicants must identify a faculty mentor who is willing to supervise the proposed aerospace research project, and work with that faculty member to develop a proposal to the Alaska Space Grant Program. However, the student applicant must write the proposal.

Eligibility

All students that are enrolled or admitted for study at UAF are eligible to apply.

The Classroom Material Grants are intended to provide funding for projects that bring aerospace-related topics into K-12 classrooms throughout Alaska. Preference will be given to proposals that (1) leverage grant funds with other sources of matching funds, (2) maximize the impact on the greatest number of participants, and/or (3) provide a lasting benefit in the form of curriculum or materials that will continue to be used in the future.
