Project Lift Off Camp

Students from two village schools on Kodiak Island studied and learned about aerospace science and the solar system, then built and launched model rockets in anticipation of the Alaska Aerospace Development Corporation first rocket launch. Termed Project Lift-Off, the program involved Chiniak and Akhiok students, preservice teachers from Alaska Pacific University and the 1995 National Teacher of the Year, Elaine Griffin, during the week of August 30 - September 4 at Chiniak School. Although the initial launch scheduled for September 1 was scrubbed, Project Lift-Off participants did claim the first launch at the Kodiak Island Launch Facility on September 4. (A newsletter detailing the week's activities can be viewed here.)

Project Lift-Off was a Kodiak Island Borough School District and Alaska Pacific University joint effort that hopes to continue in coming years. Supporting Agencies included: Safeway Food and Drug of Kodiak, Laidlaw Transit, Kodiak Island Borough School District School-to-Work Office, Kodiak Rotary Club, Key Bank and the Alaska Space Grant Program.
