DEGREES AWARDED:

  • Ph.D. University of Alaska, Fairbanks, Department of Anthropology (Archaeology) Aug. 1997
  • M.A. University of Alaska, Fairbanks, Department of Anthropology (Archaeology). Sept. 1991
  • B.A. University of Vermont, Department of History (Modern European History). June 1982

RESEARCH INTERESTS AND AREAL EXPERTISE:

Arctic paleoecology, palynology, vegetation change, and ecosystem reponses to climate change during the Quaternary period.

CURRENT RESEARCH:

Initiating a plant macrofossil study of mid-Pleistocene interglacial vegetation along the Yukon R. in eastern Alaska. Analyzing a transect of pollen cores from the Alaska Peninsula to the North Slope for evidence of a vegetation shift during the Little Ice Age. Studying plant macrofossils collected from Alaskan sections dated from the last interglacial (ca. 125,000 yr BP) to assess climatic differences between that period and the current interglacial. Recently analyzed plant macrofossils from a Holocene peat section on the North Slope, as well as pollen from a Holocene peat section from an island in Shelikov strait.
