International Polar Year 2007-2008
To facilitate the submission of arctic social science and humanities proposals to the International Council for Science (ICSU) for prospective endorsement as IPY projects, IASSA has launched an initiative to create a vigorous exchange of ideas, discussion, and active communication. The following was submitted to IASSA on its form at IASSA IPY Facilitation Initiative:

Susan Grigg: Online Resources for the History of Polar Science
Susan Grigg, Ph.D. (history), Interim Director of Libraries, University of Alaska Fairbanks, ffslg@uaf.edu

I am seeking scholars and repositories to collaborate on a website plus digital
archives on the history of polar science.

It might emphasize previous IPY's but would not be limited to them. It would feature archival materials of value to scholars but also be accessible to pre-university students. My institutional base is the Alaska & Polar Regions Collections of the University of Alaska Fairbanks at http://www.uaf.edu/library/apr/index.html. We collaborate with the Alaska State Library and UA Anchorage on Alaska's Digital Archives at http://vilda.alaska.edu. We hope to take part in "Accessing Grey Literature of the Polar Regions" as pre-proposed by the U.S. National Snow and Ice Data Center. A potential funding source for U.S. collaborators is the National Endowment for the Humanities, with a July 15, 2005, application deadline.

Sincere thanks to the U.S. National Science Foundation for support for the IASSA IPY facilitation initiative.
