Field StudiesThe department maintains a strong orientation to fieldwork, so UAF Anthropology faculty and students are involved in many field projects in archaeology and sociocultural anthropology.Archaeological surveys and excavations focus on the peopling of the New World, evolution of coastal adaptations, prehistoric development of Alaska's Native populations, and historic Athabaskan and Euroamerican land-use patterns. Alaska provides unlimited opportunities in sociocultural anthropology. Ethnohistoric studies of Alaska's populations and research on contemporary village life in Alaska are part of the department's activities. The Faculty and Staff page of this web site lists the specific areas of interest and expertise for each of our faculty members. This information will assist you in determining the potential for field study within your own area of interest. Field schools provide students with instruction and hands-on
experience in methods of field research. We offer sociocultural and/or
archaeological (prehistoric and historic) field schools through UAF
Summer Sessions every summer. Summer 2008 Field School at Gerstle River (click here for details)
