Michel Golub from the mechanical engineering department has been active with designing an electric snowmachine.  See www.alaska.edu/uaf/cem/me/news/zero_emission_snowmachine.xml. He will make a brief announcement and will give a more formal presentation on Oct 26th.

 

We will also be visited by a Dr. Vantipa Roadrangler who is a Professor of Education From Thailand.  She is interested in inovative ways to teach science in K-12 schools.  She may be particularly interested in chatting with students who went through the ANSEP Precollege and Bridging programs.

Kelly has mentored a number of ANSEP students and has been a regular attendee at our meetings.

Kelly will be talking informally about her hibernating ground squirrel research and hopes to bring one to the meeting to get the conversation going.  It should be fun!

Dr. Shiva is interested in recruiting 2-3 ANSEP students to work on research projects in UAF's  Acdvanced Materials department.  Projects can be pursued either over the academic year or as summer internships.

Geophysical Institute

 The Arctic Ocean's ice cover has undergone big changes over the past three decades, with record low summer ice extent recorded in the past few years. The largest changes in ice extent and thickness anywhere in the Arctic have been observed in Alaska's Arctic seas. The presentation will discuss what this means for different uses of the ice cover in coastal Alaska, for example as a platform for hunting and travel or industry operations. A brief introduction to the Barrow coastal ice observatory (seaice.alaska.edu/gi) will highlight potential opportunities for students to get involved in this research

4/12/2011 Mark Hamilton (former UA President) from the "Make Alaska Competitive" coalition.

Mark Hamilton will be speaking on the looming problems of the State loosing revenue from declining oil production and our need to be proactive in this matter.  We may also be visited by Cynthia Henry who is a UA Board of Regent. 

 

We should thank Ruth Osborne for being willing to move her scheduled talk to make this presentation possible.
