IntroductionWelcome to the Tanacross Animal Book! Here you can listen to simple phrases in the Tanacross Athabascan language describing the habits and appearance of 18 animals. Each page in this "book" is devoted to a different animal. To navigate through the site either click on the arrows in the upper righthand corner, or click on the Tanacross animal names on the left side of the page. The phrases contained in the book were inspired by Nuun Ał łuug Dinahtl'aa' by Alice Brean & Paul Milanowski, published by the Alaska Native Language Center in 1977. The phrases have been written in the modern writing system by Irene Arnold and Gary Holton. The accompanying audio recordings were made with the assistance of Rick Thoman and Olga Müller. The Tanacross phrases have been transcribed using a version of the Tanacross writing system modified for use on the internet. For more information see the section on linguistic notes. For those unable to view the fonts correctly, a PDF version. is available for download. In order to listen to the audio recordings, you will need an MP3 player. We recommend Quicktime for best results. |
