Twenty years after its original publication, this work remains the standard dictionary of the language of Southwestern Alaska. The main sections contain basic words and their derivatives, and suffixes, all with English translations, grammatical information, and examples of use. Also included are an English-to-Yup’ik index and appendices covering loan words, kinship charts, numerals, directionals, the calendar, and parts of typical Yup’ik items such as the kayak, parka, sled, and the traditional house. Central Yup’ik is Alaska’s largest Native language, spoken by 10,000 people in the coastal and inland regions from the upper Alaska Peninsula and Bristol Bay to the Yukon-Kuskokwim delta.
