2003 ATHABASCAN LANGUAGES CONFERENCE
With A Special Session:
Morphological Change and Comparative Work

June 5-7, 2003         Arcata, California

Conference Theme:
Adaptation and
Change in Athabascan languages

Call for Papers

Abstracts are invited for up to 30 minute presentations on all areas of Athabascan linguistics, language teaching, language policy, and language revitalization. Presentations that address the conference theme are especially encouraged.

General Sessions

Papers and presentations on any aspect of Athabascan structure, history, and language education are welcome for the general sessions. Presentations that focus on the conference theme, "Adaptation and Change in Athabascan Languages" will be especially welcome, and at least one session will be focused on such topics as innovation in vocabulary, the influence of English, and changes in language function.

Prospective participants in the general sessions should e-mail a title and short abstract to the conference organizer, Victor Golla gollav@humboldt.edu, by April 15. Small travel subsidies may be available to participants, but this will not be known until April. If you are interested in participating but think you might not be able to attend without travel support, let us know when you submit your abstract.

In addition to solo presentaions, proposals are welcome for group discussions and panel presentations.

Papers will be reviewed for: content, pertinence to the conference theme and overall presentation length.

Submissions must include: a short abstract; the full name, title, and contact information including address, phone number, fax number and e-mail address of the person submitting; and for those who are proposing to a panel or group presentation, the abstract must be submitted by only one person, but should include the name, title, and contact information for each co-presenter.

As papers are reviewed, it may be required to group separate proposals into panel or group presentation formats. If this happens, the presenters will be contacted for their approval before the conference schedule is completed.

Special Session

A special session on "Morphological Change and Comparative Work in Athabascan languages" (June 7) is being organized by Dagmar Jung (University of Cologne) and Keren Rice (University of Toronto). The aim of the session is to exchange research results and stimulate new work in the field of diachronic studies within the Athabascan language family. Papers on historical morphology are especially welcome. Topics may include morphological change within one language or within a whole language group. Investigations of historical changes that have led to the restructuring of grammatical categories are of special interest. Since within the last few years new Athabascan data has become available, this special session may also result in a re-evaluation of Athabascan dialect and language relationships.

Anyone interested in participating in this session should email a short abstract to the organizers rice@chass.utoronto.ca or djung@uni-koeln.de with a copy to Victor Golla gollav@humboldt.edu. These should be received by April 15.

Abstracts and session proposals should be emailed to:
