Location

The 2002 Athabascan Languages Conference is hosted by the Alaska Native Language Center, with sponsorship of the University of Alaska Fairbanks, the Interior Athabascan Tribal College, the Consortium on Alaska Native Higher Education, the International Arctic Social Sciences Association, and the National Science Foundation. brings together linguists, speakers, educators and policy makers from across the Athabascan region. Over the past two decades this conference has become the principal forum in which members of geographically distant, but culturally and intellectually related, Athabascan communities can compare notes and learn from each other.

Conference sessions on Sunday, June 16 will be held at the Wood Center Ballroom on the University of Alaska Fairbanks campus.
Conference sessions on Monday, June 17 and Tuesday, June 18 will be held at the Chena River Convention Center, located in downtown Fairbanks at 109 Clay Street.

For those staying on the UAF campus, transportation to and from the Chena River Convention Center will be provided on Monday and Tuesday immediately preceeding and following the conference activities. Buses will depart UAF from the Moore-Bartlett-Skarland (MBS) complex according to the following schedule.

Regular scheduled public bus service is also available between the university and the Convention Center. See the red line schedule. Travel time is approximately 25 minutes.

Athabascan Language Development Institute

ALDI is a three-week intensive summer session program for Native language teachers and teachers' aides enrolled in the Denaqenage' Career Ladder Program. Students pursue A.A.S., B.A., and M.A. degrees in Native Language Education. Graduation and closing ceremonies for ALDI will be held in conjunction with a conference banquet. Alaska Native Language Center

A center for language documentation and education, the Alaska Native Language Center houses an archival collection of virtually everything written in or about Alaska Native languages, including copies of most of the earliest linguistic documentation, along with significant collections about related languages outside Alaska. Visitors are encouraged to make use of the archives while attending the conference. See the ANLC website.
