Some Information about Motels

The organizer has spent a little time crusing the streets of West LA, looking at some of  the places listed on the UCLA page, and here are some notes you may find useful.

UCLA GUEST HOUSE
330 Charles E. Young Drive East
Los Angeles, CA 90095
310-825-2923
310-825-6108 fax

Nice!  But booked up.

BEST WESTERN WESTWOOD PACFIC HOTEL
11250 Santa Monica Blvd.
Los Angeles, CA 90025
310-478-1400
310-478-1234 fax

This place is huge, solid and strategically placed about ten yards from the San Diego Freeway.  I think the noise at night would be kind of like the ocean, if you were very close to the ocean.    Being on Santa Monica Boulevard, it is on bus lines which run right to the beach.  This is a pretty good area for restaurants -- lots and lots of places are located within a few blocks walk.   Be sure to ask for the UCLA rate.

CLAREMONT HOTEL
1044 Tiverton Ave.
Los Angeles, CA 90024
310-208-5957 or 800-266-5957
310-208-2386 fax

This is your organizer's personal favorite for conference convenience and price.  It is literally a breath away from campus and the rates are very low.  The rates are very low because it's an old, old building (by Southern California standards!) with creaky doors and no TVs.   However, there are lots of restaurants within a quick walk, you can cross a couple of streets and visit the Botanical Gardens, and there's no TV!  Also, you can walk to the conference instead of traveling in a volunteer's automobile.   Double rooms are spacious.  There are also buses two blocks away which go literally everywhere in the LA area.

COMFORT INN - Santa Monica
2815 Santa Monica Blvd
Santa Monica, CA 90404
310-828-5517

This is a nice, solid regular motel, on a busy boulevard in Santa Monica.   It will have all the TV you can possibly watch.  More importantly, it is on the Number 1 Big Blue Bus line which goes to the beach, and the restaurants right around it (across and down the street, in little strip malls) display an exciting array of  international cuisines.

THE CULVER HOTEL
9400 Culver Blvd
Culver City, CA 90232
310-838-7963
310-815-9618 fax

The Culver is your organizer's personal pick for Hollywood Glam.  It is an old hotel of somewhat higher original class than the Claremont.   The rooms are small, but you can get a view of the hills which is rather inspiring.  This is a multi-story building in a neighborhood dominated by studios such as Sony.  It is not as convenient to the campus via bus, but isn't far away, and has a pleasant character to it.  Rates are about the same as for regular motels, but it's a different experience.  Not so great: there is a Szechuan restaurant in the building and a coffee-bakery across the street, but not the huge array of eating choices you would find in Westwood or Santa Monica.

HALF MOON MOTEL
3958 S. Sepulveda Blvd.
Culver City, CA 90230
310-391-5279

The Half Moon has no non-smoking rooms, does not make reservations over the telephone, and is on a crazily busy intersection of Sepulveda Boulevard, just where the 405 disgorges raging drivers headed all over West LA.  An anthropological experience.  Close to fast food and cheap gas.   Rates are not cheaper than the quiet and modest Claremont.
